New inventions have been known to change the world. Life before automobiles was different than it is today, for instance. The same is true of light bulbs, the Internet, cell phones, movies, guns, credit cards, personal computers, refrigerators, televisions, antibiotics, the printing press, airplanes, and many other inventions. Before 1990, a single individual had little chance at obtaining equal power and prestige as the largest corporations, but today the top nine Twitter accounts with the largest follower counts are all owned by individuals. On October 31, 2008, an innovation in currency promised to change the way people think about money, security, freedom, privacy, and information publishing. It’s called bitcoin.
