2011 was a banner year for cryptocurrencies. Both Namecoin and Litecoin saw their development that year. It was also the year crypto pioneer Jed McCaleb sold Mt. Gox, an early cryptocurrency exchange. Bitcoin evangelist Roger Ver first took an interest in bitcoin that year. Vitalik Buterin launched Bitcoin magazine and founded the Ethereum blockchain. Charlie Shrem, founder of BitInstant, took an interest in bitcoin. And a young idealist named Ross Ulbricht founded Silk Road, becoming the person most responsible for bitcoin’s reputation as a tool for criminals.
